This website includes the records of the descendants of Walter Stewart, Sr., who by family tradition came from County Antrim, Ireland and settled in Laurens County, South Carolina in 1788.  He had seven sons by two wives. In 1982 there were 6,280 known descendants and spouses in this family, which then spanned nine generations.  The publication in 1982 of a hardbound book, The Walter Stewart Family History, marked the seventy-fifth anniversary of the first Walter Stewart Clan reunion, held at New Harmony Presbyterian Church near Fountain Inn, South Carolina on October 17, 1907.  The Stewart reunion is still held near Fountain Inn on the weekend of the second Sunday in August each year, and the traditional invitation still goes out.  Bring a full picnic basket and join us!

The 103rd Anniversary Reunion weekend is coming sooner than you think, over the weekend of August 7-8, 2010.  Make plans to attend now!  Here is the current Stewart Newsletter with all the details....

The Walter Stewar Clan now has a Facebook presence - please join if you use Facebook!

The Walter Stewart Family Burial Index, a little-known type-written document produced in 1987 by 31714 William Rawlinson, has been converted to an editable file and posted here for use by family members.  It shows burials locations by cemetery for a number of South Carolina and Civil War locations.  If we receive good feedback on this document, we may be able to expand it over time.  If anyone is interested in taking on an updating of a document like this, family records in document and scanned PDF format will be eagerly provided!  (Contact the page author if you are interested in this activity!) The burial index is posted here in Adobe PDF format.  If you do not have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program to read the PDF files, you can download and install it for free at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

The 100th Anniversary Reunion in 2007 has come and gone, leaving behind it a a wonderful familial glow and a multitude of new memories.  August 11-12, 2007 marked the Centennial Reunion of the First Stewart Family Reunion that was held in 1907.  We had record turnout at the Saturday and the Sunday activities.  The work that that went into planning and preparing for the Reunion paid off generously to make the weekend a very special family event!  Read lots more about the 100th Anniversary Reunion here.   Here you will find the wonderful picture taken of the Reunion attendees at New Harmony Presbyterian Church on August 12, 2007.  This picture is relatively low resolution (150dpi) so that it will be a reasonable size to view in your browser.  A higher resolution version can be emailed to you on request if you are interested in printing it.  If you would rather have an 8"x11" print of the picture sent directly to you, send $15 to John and Polly Hellams, 108 Nash St., Fountain Inn, SC  29644.

By popular demand, the family history presentation that was shown during the Saturday, August 11, 2007 Reunion activities is posted here and the text of Carl Kramer's talk on the family history is posted here.  They are in Adobe PDF format due to the large size of the original files.  If you do not have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program to read the PDF files, you can download and install it for free at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

An addition to this site has been made as a happy side-effect from the 100th Reunion planning.  151222 John Hellams and 351231 LaMarr Brooks made a highly significant contribution by providing pictures and movies of significant past and present Stewart properties in Upstate South Carolina.

We would really like to continue to add to our archive of Stewart Reunion photographs.   We have a nice selection of pictures back to 1995, but very few from before then.  Please make a point of bringing copies of your past Reunion pictures to the Reunion next time!  We'll scan them on the spot and return them to you immediately.  Or if you prefer, you can e-mail electronic pictures any time to Judy Smith or Mary Newton at jmlesslie_777@yahoo.com or mary at walterstewart dot org.  Other kinds of Stewart photographs are also encouraged!

This website is and has been a work in progress since 1999...the input of Stewart Clan members is strongly encouraged!
